Family and Frontier – April 4 – April 15, 2013

We spent 7 days in Houston with our youngest daughter and her family.  During that time we were able to attend the “A” Honor Roll party for our Grandsons, spend time with family and friends we have met over the years, and just enjoy life.  We stayed our one of our favorite RV Parks so that helped make the trip enjoyable.?????????????????????Our favorite Campground in HoustonDSCN4438 Grandchildren Ryan and Kyle at School after their “A” Honor roll party

Spending time with family and being a part of their normal life routine is not the norm for us.  We are usually only able to participate on special holidays, which is anything but “normal”.  We also took Kyle and his family to his favorite birthday place.  It’s called Incredible Pizza and is best described as Chucky Cheese on mega steroids.  Besides a huge buffet, it includes mini ice skating, mini bowling, mini golf, laser tag, race cars and every video game known to man.  I even saw some vintage games like Donkey Kong and Pac Man.  I have to admit, we had just as much fun as the kids.

We ended our family fun with a three day camping trip at Fort Richardson State Park near Jacksboro, Texas. DSCN4477 The park is built around the remnants of Fort Richardson which was activated between 1867 and 1878 for the Indian Wars fought during that time.  This particular weekend was complete with reenactments of life on the fort in those days.CAM00018 Hospital at Fort RichardsonCAM00030 There were Indian story tellers, and a demonstration and explanation of Indian chants, a Military pharmacist and surgeon explaining what medicines they had and how they treated certain illnesses and injuries.  There were demonstrations on how they made the powder packs, how to shoot the cannons, and soldiers to talk to about their gear and hardships of the day.  There was even an Indian vendor selling Indian Tacos and Fried Bread.  Since I have this fascination with food, we decided to try them and were pleasantly surprised. Think fried bread with taco fillings on top!

Of course we hiked some of the trails, had campfires every night, told stories and ate and laughed more than you can imagine.DSCN4474 I wander which way we should go.
CAM00038 DSCN4478  We had a wonderful time with our family and were sorry to have to leave, but they had school on Monday so they left Sunday afternoon.  Before they left, Jim reached back to his childhood days and taught his grandsons how to make whistles out of acorns.  They were a big hit with the boys and not so big with Mom and Dad for the 6 hour trip home.  We stayed in the park one more night to rest and left Monday morning.  Grandpop and Grammie are not as young as they used to be!
