Early in the morning we met our favorite taxi driver, Dennis, and headed to the St. Kitts/Nevus ferry to explore the sister island.
MaryGrace, Louise and Joe walking toward ferry to Nevis (what good looking legs)
Half the size and one-third the population, the ride took 45 minutes to go from Basseterre to Charlestown, the two capitols. Nevus is the home of the Four Seasons Resort. Dennis arranged a driver to meet us at the ferry on Nevus and take us for a three-hour tour of the island and then to the Four Seasons for lunch.
As we got off the ferry, there was Dale waiting just as was arranged. Our first stop was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, our founding father, who lived here until he was about 10 years old.
Nevus and St. Kitts have the same Prime Minister and Federal Government, but have local representation. Just like St. Kitts, the sugar cane industry left Nevus and tourism is now their main industry. I asked Dale and he agreed the economy of both St. Kitts and Nevus has generally gotten better without the sugar cane industry and the ramped up tourism industry. Jim and I came to St. Kitts sometime in the 1990s and we both agree the general economy seems to be much improved.
Several of the larger sugar cane plantations have been converted to small, high-end bed and breakfast type resorts. The most outstanding of the locations we visited is the Montpelier Plantation.
This is a place Princess Diana stayed with her two boys when they were young. The plantation has 17 rooms and we guessed her entourage used all of them at the time. It sits high on a hill overlooking lush mountain views and modernized facilities designed for the most discriminate guests. Check out this swimming pool.
But as I was reminded, if you have to ask “how much”, you can’t afford it.
We visited a few other converted plantations and found this beautiful Angel Trumpet tree on one of them with an emphasis on landscaping.

And this plantation made from Iron Wood.
The oldest wooden structure in the Caribbean
The Four Seasons resort is one of the few located on the beach with all the amenities most tourist look for with the atmosphere so prevalent on the islands.

We were a little disappointed in their menu, hoping for something more exotic, but what we had, was very well prepared. It was the little touches that made the difference. We were given wet towels before we ordered to “freshen up” with and the ice tea was served with liquid sugar. Even the french fries were served in a little fry basket instead just on your plate.
Nevus is a beautiful island to visit, smaller, more remote, but the same friendly people we love on St. Kitts.
