The first week in August we flew out to California to see our family there and it was time to go somewhere again. This time we came to St. Kitts in the West Indies and one of our favorite vacation places. The island is just 9 miles long with lush vegetation and beautiful aqua water and reefs like many of the other islands, but the people are what make it different.

Atlantic ocean side of the island, view from property where we are staying
View of grounds on property Unlike Jamaica where you are warned not to leave the resort, you are encouraged to go wherever you like and it is safe. There is a dignity and pride in the people and they realize tourism is their economic industry.
Unfortunately, getting to St Kitts is not easy. We left our house at 3:45 a.m. to catch a 7:00 a.m. flight to Miami and then connection to St Kitts. That means by dinner time we had already been awake 15 hours and by 9 pm we were waaaay past tired. Since the airlines don’t give you much to eat anymore, we arrived hungry and stayed that way most of the day. We had dinner (grouper and snapper) at a restaurant out on the beach and once our stomachs were full, sleep was not far behind.
The next day was much better. We spent the day in bathing suits by the pool taking in the sun and surf.
We have our friends Louise and Joe with us and they have never been to St. Kitts before so watching them see things for the first time has been fun. At 11 am we took part in a water aerobics class that really gets your heart pumping. (That’s what I’m talking about, man!) Lunch was on property at the outdoor restaurant (still in swimsuits) and then Jim and Joe went snorkeling on the reefs off the resort, while Louise and I watched the water volleyball game and trivia games.
Our choice for dinner was a place called Marshall’s. Most of the nice restaurants open at 6 pm and we were there promptly at 6:30 ready to eat something special and delicious while looking out at the view of Nevus (sister island). I was not disappointed when the soup of the day was eggplant soup. Oh my gosh! Unusual and delicious and a perfect appetizer for pan seared snapper with St. Christopher sauce which is a salsa of tomatoes, olives, and other secret ingredients. Life is really good on the island. No worries!
SWEAT. I can tell you having any fun. GBary
